A Non-Gambler's Las Vegas

Las Vegas has been on my travel bucket list for years, because it always just had this allure of a must see destination. Although as the years have passed I have to say that it has been slowly dropping in priority. My idea of gambling consists of putting a single quarter in a slot machine and walking away. I also dread feeling trapped inside anywhere without windows. My idea of vacation always involves some outdoor activity and/or sitting by a pool or on the beach. So when my husband surprised me with a trip to Vegas in honor of my 30th Birthday, I wasn't quite sure how to react. As a Travelista, I of course love to go anywhere, Europe, Australia, Caribbean, Hawaii...but Vegas started to bring on feelings of anxiety. Was I going to be surrounded by smoke filled slot machines pinging away? Cheesy neon signs? Nothing but pavement and hot sun on the outside? Elvis impersonators?

Well despite all my hesitations, I'm very glad we went and did not trade in the tickets to another more tropical destination. Everyone must see Vegas! I started to relax the morning we boarded our flight as the stewardess announced "Anyone with small children or acting like a small child may now board."

We stayed at the New York, New York. It was in a great location right on the strip. The rooms were nice and there were plenty of food options including a Starbucks in the lobby and a pizza place that stayed open late. On the down side, the pool was on the fairly small in comparison to others we saw in the area. We rented chairs one day, which came with great amenities, and it was not crowded. However next time we go I may opt for somewhere like the MGM Grand (which from what I saw) had miles of outdoor pool areas.

The first day we spent walking the strip and through the various hotels to get our bearings. There are plenty of sites to see, and I was actually surprised by how far we walked. I was warned prior to going (and I will pass on the advice) bring comfortable shoes to Vegas! If you head out in stilettos, make sure to pack your flip flops in your purse, You'll need them!

There was plenty to see. I loved the canals at the Venetian and the awe inspiring fountains of the Bellagio. I think we watched them 10 times in the course of our trip and it never got old. For the shopaholics there is no shortage of stores to hit. I think the stores alone could have kept me and my wallet busy for days. We did break up our tour every so often with a drink at a bar or two. Some of our favorites included Margaritas at Margaritaville and the chilled fruity cocktails served in ice glasses at Minus 5. While Minus 5 is on the pricey side, it's still fun to get bundled up and experience somewhere completely made of ice!

The second day was spent by the pool in pampered fashion complete with a waiter and a bucket of drinks at the ready. That night we walked up to the Bellagio for dinner and a show. Bellagio was quickly becoming one of my favorite places. The lobby has a regal feel. The Chihuly glass exhibit on the ceiling adds warmth to the ambiance. As you walk straight back you run into the beautiful botanical gardens complete with hedges trimmed into different forms throughout the year and skipping water fountains. Chihuly glass leaves were suspended and felt as though they were floating from the ceiling. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Todd English's Olives. We then proceeded to our front row seats for "O" by Cirque de Soleil. It was truly an awe inspiring show. Even being that close I was amazed every time the performers would walk across the stage and then suddenly dive into a pool below only to disappear and reappear running across the stage again. It was amazing! I would see it again if I had the chance.
On our last day we again found a pool, however this time we opted for a bit more excitement with the MGM's Wet Republic all day pool party. This was the one point where I could see an advantage to going with a large group of friends. Being able to rent a cabana with a bunch of friends would have added to the experience, however we still had a great time and met some people along the way. We closed out the day with drinks at the top of The Palms. The view of the city was spectacular, I apologize as my photos did not do it justice. The see-through floor to the street only made my heart race a bit, but was also pretty cool.

All in all we had a great time and I can safely cross this one of my list. I may not add it to a regular rotation, but I would go back with friends if given the opportunity. There was more than enough to keep this non-gambling, out-door loving Travelista busy and happy all weekend!

Into the Beara: Exploring Ireland’s ‘Other’ Southwest Peninsula

It hardly looked like the parking lot and entry to the tallest ogham stone in Europe: a narrow driveway to a white cottage, with a barking, tail-wagging collie on guard.

As the lone tourist in a small car pulled into the small yard, the owner stepped from the house in greeting, wiping her hands on her apron.

“Oh sure, you can park here, but I have to be going to the shop soon, so please don’t block my car. The stone’s that way,” she said, gesturing vaguely to a pasture behind the house. “And mind you close the gate.”

After passing through a rusty metal gate and up a muddy path sprinkled with sheep droppings, there it was: Ballycrovane Stone, standing an impressive 17 feet tall, a white granite monolith on the barren landscape.

Ogham (oh-ahm) refers to the ancient alphabet system that used a series of hash marks to represent sounds, or letters. The marks halfway up Ballycrovane are thought to spell out the name of an ancient clansmen whose achievements are long forgotten. Only his name remains.

Every year thousands of tourists board buses and rent cars to tour Ireland’s southwest peninsulas of Dingle and Iveragh (better known as the Ring of Kerry), but few venture just a bit further east to discover the hidden treasure that is the Beara Peninsula.

Their loss is the adventurous traveler’s gain. As writer Leon Uris put it in Ireland: A Terrible Beauty: “Wind, fog, sea and craggy rock crescendo here and the wildest of Ireland’s wild moors give testimony to the mysticism of the land.”

The peninsula is riddled with ancient Neolithic monuments, from Europe’s tallest ogham stone to one of Ireland’s most impressive and intact stone circles. If the stones could talk they would tell a tale of settlement and war, victory and defeat, riches gained and lost; a microcosm of Irish history within the Beara’s rocky shores.

The Beara escaped the development mania that gripped Ireland during the Celtic Tigers days of the mid 2000’s, and is relatively unchanged in the last century — or more. This is the “real” Ireland, where cows are herded down Main Street at milking time and strangers quickly become friends with locals over a pint in the pub.

The launching point for the Beara is the colorful County Kerry market town of Kenmare, known for its many fine restaurants, pubs and lively Wednesday farmers market. Just across the Kenmare River the road forks, with the right hand leading straight onto the peninsula. The road quickly narrows considerably, which is the main reason there are not big bus tours — they can’t navigate the serpentine “highway.”
For the next several hours the road bends, dips and twists, with surprises and breathtaking views around every corner.

To the west is the Iveragh Peninsula and the McGullicuddy Reeks mountain range with the Bay of Kenmare shining in the foreground. To the east is the rugged spine of the Beara, the Caha and Slieve Mishkish mountain ranges. To the south the twin island peaks of Skellig Michael and Lesser Skellig loom on the watery horizon.

Among the surprises awaiting travelers to the Beara are colorful villages with even more colorful pasts, Ireland’s only cable car (across the roiling Strait of Dursey to Dursey Island) and a serene Buddhist retreat center, perched on a cliff facing the Atlantic.

While it would seem easy to get lost on the Beara, the traveler who takes the time is also likely to find themselves here, in the land of the ancients.

Quick Escape to Newport

Less than 2 hours from Boston, Newport is the perfect two (or even one) night escape from Boston. This trip did not require much planning, we simply knew that we wanted to bike, hike, and hang out in Newport.

Friday night, we called the Newport Beach Hotel and Suites and snagged one of the last available rooms at a rate for Saturday night that was at least $100 less than others in the area. This hotel was a fabulous find. It is actually located just over the border in Middletown RI, however it is directly across the street from Easton Beach and within easy walking distance of the start of the famous Cliff Walk behind the mansions. It is also a quick (although uphill) bike ride to downtown. Our room was a bit small, but that would be it's only fault. It was very clean, perfect temperature, and completely re-modeled with new furnishings. I also peeked into other rooms as they were being cleaned and all of the rooms were larger than ours, probably due to our last minute reservation.

We arrived at the hotel a little before 12, and although it was too early to check in, the desk clerk was very pleasant and helpful. She provided us with our parking pass and a map of Newport along with some directions to start the Ocean Drive bike ride. The bike ride offered some amazing picture opportunities and was very easy to navigate. We ended our ride with a fabulous lunch and some fruity drinks at Pier 49 Seafood and Spirits.

We then returned to the hotel and took advantage of the hotel roof deck to relax before dinner. We even had opportunity to be witnesses of a beautiful seaside wedding.

That evening we enjoyed a relaxed dinner at Pour Judgment. This casual locale, had outstanding cuisine and we filled up on their appetizer offerings.

The next morning we went in town to get breakfast before embarking on the Cliff Walk. We first visited the Coffee Grinder for a tasty caramel latte. We then strolled over to The Cookie Jar, thinking we may find a few snacks for the hike, instead we discovered that the Cookie Jar also offers amazing breakfast sandwiches! We had probably one of the best sausage and cheese sandwiches I've ever tasted. We were tempted to take an extra for lunch.

Although we had done the Cliff Walk before from the Breakers, this time we intended to do the full circuit. The reviews mention that the Southern half becomes a hike, and I would head those notes before going again. I was poorly outfitted in flip flops for the hike/climb across see wall rocks that eventually ensued. It was well worth the effort though as that portion of the walk was less crowded and still offered some amazing views.

Unfortunately it started to get a bit cloudy as we finished, so we decided not to extend the stay through the afternoon on Easton beach, but overall we felt it was an amazing weekend getaway and can't wait to go back next summer!

Loved loved loved Little Arches!!!!!

Loved loved loved Little Arches!!!!!

And thank you so much for all your help planning. Especially with the wine and cheese waiting in our room for our late arrival. Very nice after getting in so late. Thank you!!!!

We really loved Barbados too. It's not cheap, but some great restaurants and very pretty beaches. But, for us, the best part was Little Arches Hotel. We LOVED it!

We absolutely loved it, but we like the smaller more boutique hotels better than resorts. This is not the place for someone that wants resort activities and/or someone waiting on them hand and foot, this is not the place. It is a beautiful and very charming boutique hotel across the street form a beautiful beach. It was a villa someone turned into a hotel, so it is in a residential neighborhood, not up on the West Coast where all the resorts are.

Here are some details:
Only 10 rooms and because it was a home, each room is different. There are 3 right off the pool area (where we were) so not very private. But the hotel is so small and quiet it doesn't matter really ; we felt like the pool area was our own private patio almost with gorgeous views of the Caribbean. 3 garden rooms with huge patios and hot tubs in the back of the property which looked very nice. 2 big ocean deluxe with plunge pools in the front. The two other rooms I would not recommend at all. They are in busier areas and one is on the parking lot.

Little Arches is not right on the beach..but across the street and down about 2 minutes. Really no further than walking from your room at a normal resort. They bring your chairs down for you, but no beach service. There is a local guy on the beach with beer, rum punches and food. We never ate there but had plenty of rum punches. We didn't mind at all having to wait on ourselves and certainly cheaper than the $15 cocktails at a resort. I thought it would really bug me having to wait on myself, but we actually found it fun. The beach is gorgeous and we loved that the Bajan people used it as well .

The Cafe Luna on the rooftop is gorgeous and very romantic. Beautiful Caribbean views as well. We ate there every morning and a few nights. Great!

But, what makes this place special is the staff. They are wonderful and will do anything for you . Every single one of them took great pride in making sure we loved Barbados and their hotel. By the end, we knew everyone by name and vice versa.

It is very romantic so if someone wants a honeymoon in a place like this it is perfect. Would not suggest for a girls trip. Too romantic and all couples. Unless you could take over the entire hotel.

All and all, this is a hotel for the independent traveler who wants to feel more of a part of Barbados, not isolated behind a wall at a resort. So, don't let someone choose Little Arches because it is cheaper than the resorts (it is) but it is a very different concept and they would be disappointed. From the very few negative reviews on TA, I think those people had expectations that hotel was a resort. It is not. But it is quite beautiful and very charming.

We really absolutely loved it. I could and would definitely go back and I do not say that often...to many other places to go. I can't say enough about the people that work there. In a nutshell.... It is like being in a beautiful home and the owner is away and his personal staff is trying to make sure you have a very special stay.

A few other notes... we went out a couple of times. Champers is excellent...would want a table by the rail so need reservations. It is gorgeous. We also did a Silver Cloud catamaran snorkel thing. Recommend this company to anyone. They charge more. It was $100 pp over about $40 pp. But they limit it to 12 people. we saw other boats with 30/40 people and it looked miserable. Was well worth the extra $$.

As Leah mentions, she tried to book on her own so her flight experience was not the best. She contacted us to after the fact and we were able to make sure her experience once she arrived was much better! As you will read Leah loved her accomodations as well as her first (probably not last) visit to St Thomas:

GETTING TO, FROM, AND AROUND ST. THOMAS

Brought on by a dear friend’s destination wedding, my cousin agreed to join me on a trip down to the Virgin Islands and so, beginning on February 19, 2011, I spent a week in paradise. Getting there and back was a little cumbersome but I’m happy to say that long stopovers in multiple airports were more than worth the trouble. In the interest of full disclosure, I am TERRIBLE at booking travel – even though I do a ton of research, when it comes time to actually book, I get really excited and end up choosing the worst of all possible options. So while flight schedules and availability aren’t as convenient as the hourly Boston-New York shuttle, there were probably a number of more convenient options available that I overlooked.
I realized after I booked that I should of contacted A Girl’s Gotta Go from the start as they advised me they could of booked me much better flight and price options. Next time I will for sure!

Thirteen hours after the journey began, we finally touched down in Charlotte Amalie at 9:30pm local time, greeted at the terminal with samples of local rum (I was too tired to indulge but that kind of welcome is definitely memorable). The taxi stand was organized chaos but it didn’t take more than a few minutes to be loaded into the back of a van and on our way to the Wyndham Sugar Bay (after stops for other travelers at the Ritz Carlton and Red Hook Ferry terminal).

This was the first of many taxi rides that week because once you’re out of Charlotte Amalie, it’s kind of hard to walk anywhere. A lot of people rent cars when they visit St. Thomas but the idea of driving on the left side of the road makes me a little nervous. The roads in St. Thomas are winding and narrow with lots of hills and blind spots around every corner. So while it was the more expensive option, I’m glad I opted not to attempt car rental. Taxi fare is set across the island depending on where you’re coming from and going to – sometimes this works out to be relatively reasonable and others, it’s rather expensive but at least you know, in advance, what the ride will cost.

ACCOMODATIONS – WYNDHAM SUGAR BAY RESORT
I was exhausted from the long day of traveling so by the time our taxi pulled onto the hill leading up to the resort, anything with four walls, a clean bathroom, and a bed would have seemed like heaven. Fortunately, the Wyndham Sugar Bay provided much more than an acceptable place to sleep. My first impression: it was absolutely beautiful. Walking into the main building to check in was like walking into what I imagine it was like walking into a plantation home – that is to say, it’s stunning. We checked in and were shown to our rooms by a gentleman named Jude from the Concierge staff. A lot of guests are driven to their rooms by golf cart but our room, 313, was right there in the first building outside the lobby.

The room was a fairly good size, it was clean and well decorated but the real kicker was when Jude showed us out to the balcony at the end of room. The view was breathtaking. Literally. Down to the left, the pool was aglow and to the right laid the beach with the moon shining out onto a beautiful ocean and a cluster of islands not so far in the distance.

The main building and guest rooms sit atop a steep hill with the beach, pool, fitness center, restaurants and recreation areas at the foot of the hill. That said, there are approximately 90 steps between the guest rooms and the pool (I counted). Going down is easy but coming back up can be a little tough, especially after a day in the sun. Honestly though, it’s not really that bad and the hotel runs a little shuttle between the top and bottom of the hill every 10-15 minutes, as needed.

While the Wyndham’s beach is small, I never felt crowded and I appreciate that it is for guests only (the beaches at some of the other resorts allow non-guests to use the beach – this would be great if I were on a cruise but I wouldn’t be too thrilled if I were a registered guest trying to snag a spot on the sand). The water is gorgeous and while there is coral to watch out for, the water is so clear that it’s hard to miss. Aside from other staff and other vacationers, there are some animals roaming around the property. Most notably, there are iguanas and cats.

To be honest, I was actually sort of scared of iguanas before this trip. I’ve always known they’re not really dangerous but they look a little bit too much like fire-breathing dragons for my taste. There are a lot of iguanas at the Wyndham Sugar Bay so it was either get over my phobia or avoid 90% of the grounds, including the beach and pool area. After the first day, I realized they’re not actually scary, especially after I found out they don’t have sharp teeth (even though they think your feet are cherries if you wear red toenail polish and yes, they like to eat cherries). Also, they’re kind of funny, especially the one that snuck down on the beach acting all coy as he wandered over to steal the pineapple garnish off of some guys drink – it was awesome. The cats are fewer in number but I still counted at least seven different felines. They all seem to be really friendly, just hanging out looking cute (and more importantly, not following you around meowing and trying to get inside the rooms). There’s a sign stating they are all fixed, up-to-date on shots, and are cared for by local Humane Society volunteers. There are little huts with scratching posts, water, and big bowls of food. I wouldn’t have expected something so charming from a large hotel chain and was pleasantly surprised.

My overall impression of the Wyndham Sugar Bay was incredibly positive; it’s beautiful, comfortable, safe, and has lots of amenities. I have to give A Girl’s Gotta Go the credit for our staying in such awesome accomodations. I actually booked a completely different hotel at the same time that I got the flights but I started to have a weird feeling that it wasn’t a good choice. There was a minimal cancellation fee at the original place so I did what I should have done in the first place and reached out to A Girl’s Gotta Go and they quickly got us set up at the Wyndham. Thank God! We drove past the other hotel on the way from the airport and while it seemed OK enough from the outside, the Wyndham Sugar Bay it was not. This confirmed what I was already considering; I am never going to book my own travel again. The ladies at A Girl’s Gotta Go are experts and I can’t thank them enough for swooping in and saving the day!

Foregoing the all-inclusive option, we ate most of our meals off-site. We did have the buffet breakfast at the Manor House the first four days and while the food wasn’t gourmet, it was very good. Aside from breakfast, we also ordered late-night (mushroom pizza and a turkey club) at the Ocean Club bar and paid for the lunch buffet (burrito/fajita day) at the Mangrove Restaurant down by the pool. These were OK but should have been much better, considering the cost.

DRINKS AND DINING
We spent most of our evenings in the Red Hook, just down the road from the Wyndham. I loved it here – there’s a nice mix of tourists and locals. People hop around between the different bars and I met a lot of really cool people from all over the place. Of particular note in Red Hook are Big Bambooz, the Caribbean Saloon, and Duffy’s Love Shack.

Big Bambooz is a burger place, modeled after a Hawaiian Tiki Bar. We went there three different times - once for dinner and twice for drinks. We actually spent our whole last night at Big Bambooz, even though we originally intended to bounce around between a couple different establishments. This place is right up my alley - it's laid back with decent food, fun decor, friendly staff (especially bartenders Joel and the fireblowing Gustavo), great music, and a good selection of drinks, including my new favorite beer, St. John's Brewery's Mango Pale Ale. When we went to Big Bambooz, good times were definitely had by all.

Also highly recommended and situated just next door to Big Bambooz is the Caribbean Saloon. If you see a neon sign that would be more appropriate for an arcade than a sports bar, pull over because you’re in the right place. The food is excellent. Being a creature of habit, we had dinner there twice. Both times, I had the crab cakes with a loaded baked potato and both times, they were awesome. According to my cousin, this place knows how to make a good steak too.

And then there’s Duffy’s Love Shack. Everyone talks about Duffy’s Love Shack. Just across the street from Big Bambooz and the Caribbean Saloon, Duffy’s is an open-air bar settled in the middle of a not-so-large parking lot. Yes. A parking lot. Having been told it was the place to be, we headed down to Duffy’s on Sunday night but were a little disappointed – the drinks were good and came in cool souvenir glasses but they were overpriced. There weren’t too many people and those who were hanging out were sloppy drunk so we headed home. It was a completely different story on Wednesday, lady’s night when the beers are discounted and well drinks are free for the females. We headed here with low expectations after having dinner at Iggie’s Carnival Night over at the Bolongo Bay Beach Resort. Iggie’s was OK but more because we met up with my friend than anything else – the show isn’t very long, the food is mediocre, and it’s really disorganized. Also, it’s too expensive for what it is so a few free drinks sounded like a good idea. I had a great time (perhaps a little too great considering we had to report to the dock at 7:00am the next day for our BVI tour).

Outside of Red Hook, we ate at Coconuts in Charlotte Amalie and the Fat Turtle in Yacht Have Grande. Owned by a couple from Massachusetts’ South Shore, walking into Coconuts is like walking into the local Townie bar down the street in any city or town in Massachusetts. Obviously, the atmosphere is great (police patches, license plates, and old school political bumper stickers adorn the walls), the food is good, and it’s cheap. It was pretty cool that the owner came over to introduce herself after the bartender told her we hailed from Boston.

On the other hand, I wasn’t too impressed with the Fat Turtle. It’s cool to look out at all the huge yachts but otherwise, I thought it was mediocre. There’s supposedly a great dance party there on Friday nights. That’s not really my thing but I was on vacation so I figured, what the heck? We planned on staying but ended up taking off right after dinner – the food wasn’t great, portions were small, the wait staff was nice but not very attentive, and everything was WAY overpriced. The tipping point for me though was the crowd. As families started rolling out and party-goers coming in, I found myself among a bunch of people trying way too hard to be casually cool. I know that’s more than a little judgmental because a lot of people love the Fat Turtle and have a great time there but it just wasn’t my scene and I was glad when we headed back to Red Hook.

THE BIG EVENT – A CEREMONY AT LIMETREE BEACH AND RECEPTION AT THE MARRIOT FRENCHMAN’S REEF
The opportunity to relax in the sunshine was certainly appreciated but the whole point of the trip was to see my friend tie the knot. The ceremony began at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 on the shore of Limetree Beach. It was beautiful – white sand, blue skies, and crystal clear water. The only thing more gorgeous than the scenery was my lovely friend as she walked down the aisle (obviously). After the ceremony, we all sipped rum punch and took pictures before heading over to the Marriot Frenchman’s Reef & Morningstar Beach Resort for a laid back family-style luncheon. Lunch was good. The cake was awesome. The cake itself was moist and flavorful without being overwhelming but the frosting was the real winner; whipped vanilla with just a faint taste of banana. So delicious.

The whole was so nice and if the celebration is an indication of how their life will be together, my newly-wedded friend and her husband are destined for greatness.

EXPLORING

Aside from the wedding, there was really only one thing I wanted to do; go to the British Virgin Islands. I did a lot of research before the trip into which company had the best day trips, based on both quality and price. My search yielded a company called New Horizons, which offered a day trip for $175, including the $30 customs fee. Everything about it sounded cool.

The first half of the week had high winds choppy so we booked the trip for Thursday hoping for some improvement and although the water was a little choppy, I barely noticed. I have to say, New Horizons lived up to the hype – it was a great day! Aside from us, there were three families on the boat, which, according to the crew, resulted in a mellower mood than they usually experience. Having had an extra drink or two at Duffy’s the night before; this was fine by me. With the way they were offering up Painkillers and beer, I can certainly see how the trips can get a little rowdy (in a good way). I was a little surprised that we were the only passengers to board at St. Thomas. This made the first few minutes a little awkward but gave us a chance to get to know the crew (John was our captain, supported by Tori and Amanda) on a more familiar level before they had to go into full-speed hospitality mode, which was great because it just so happened that they were super cool.

We started out at the Baths on Virgin Gorda. They were not at all what I expected. For some reason, I figured they would be hot springs or something like that but actually, they’re a bunch of cool caves situated along a pretty little beach. We hiked down to and back from the beach. Literally hiked. It wasn’t like going up and down Mount Washington or anything but it was still a dirt path in the middle of the woods going up and down the side of a tall and steep(ish) hill. I thought we went to Tortola next but according to the New Horizons website, the itinerary is Diamond Reef first and then Tortola. Regardless of the order, as could be expected, both locations are beautiful. Lunch on Tortola was a little early but pretty good. I would have liked some more time on the island but another tour boat was coming in shortly after us so we had to eat and run. In the water at Diamond Reef (we didn’t go ashore) I discovered that I have a coral phobia. The water was so clear when we were snorkeling in that I’d be swimming along and all of a sudden, there would be a huge coral monster just a foot or two away. Once I realized the coral was obviously out to kill me, I mostly just swam circles around the area where there weren’t any plants, fish, or animals – it was relaxing, but sort of defeated the purpose of snorkeling and I missed spotting a sea turtle hanging out closer to shore…at least the fire coral didn’t get me. Our last stop, Jost Van Dyke, was beautiful. There is something to be said for a place where you have to swim to get ashore and it has the whitest sand I’ve ever seen. Like everyone else, we checked out the Soggy Dollar Bar and the few other little beachside huts selling tourist-y things before settling down in the sand. It was really hot – a little too hot actually and I was sort of happy when it was time to swim back to the boat.

SHOPPING

And finally, there’s shopping. A trip to the Caribbean wouldn’t be complete without a little tax-free spending, would it? Friday was spent wandering around Charlotte Amalie. Honestly, I was a little underwhelmed. There is a ton of jewelry and the prices are awesome but that’s about it. I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, especially not the higher-end pieces that most of the stores were selling, so after going a little nuts in a store called the Silver Corner, it was just a lot of dodging eager salespeople in the street intrusively promising to negotiate the best deals. Even though I don’t normally wear fancy jewelry, I was tempted to drop a healthy amount on some blue diamonds. The blue diamonds down there are different than anything I’ve ever seen – instead of looking like sapphires, they are this beautiful teal color that I’m completely obsessed with (I ended up with a small pair of earrings that I plan to upgrade on my next visit). Aside from cheap jewelry, I found this fantastic bath and body store called Laline – I’m in love with their products and was relieved to find out I can buy their products online.

We hit up the vendor stands too. They had a lot of pretty jewelry mixed in with a bunch of tourist merchandise and knock-off designer bags. I bought a Caribbean hook bracelet from one of the vendors for $20. I was psyched because all of the others I had seen ran $50 and higher but I wish I had sprung for a bracelet from the Silver Corner instead because, even though the woman said it was solid sterling silver but a few days after I got home, my wrist tapped against a door and the hook broke right off. I looked at the bracelet and yet, there was sterling silver coating but it was certainly not solid – I’m glad I didn’t pay full price…

And so it was that on Saturday, February 26, 2011, we were back at the Cyril E. King airport heading back to Boston. I was sad to go and honestly, if I had brought my dog down there with me, there really is a fair chance that I would have stayed. We had an awesome time and I have a ton of great memories. I can’t wait to go back.

Becoming Bodacious in the Bugaboos: A Canadian Heli-Hiking Adventure by Ellen Barone

“I’m off to the Bugaboos.” Just saying it, feels bodacious; though I am neither bold nor audacious by nature. What I am, unfortunately, is heavier than I’d like (thanks to a love affair with chocolate), and I can rationalize my way out of a morning run faster than you can say Mocha Grande. So why am I traveling solo to the Canadian Rockies for a Bodacious Girlfriend Getaway heli-hiking and yoga vacation. Why not?

The simple purity and intense beauty of the West has long been a place where dream seekers can indulge such brazen fantasies unfettered by the hard facts of reality. Turning intimidating concepts into inspiring life-enhancing adventures, in fact, is what Canadian Mountain Holidays (CMH), has been doing since 1965 when they first started ferrying skiers by helicopter into the remote mountains of British Columbia.

“Welcome to my office,” says Lyle Grisedale, a professional CMH hiking guide and designated ‘bodacious bro’ on our women-only getaway. A courteous bon vivant with enough Irish devilment in him to fit right in with the girls, Grisedale is equal parts superhero, spiritual guru and mountain goat. Beyond his outstretched arm, tower the wild and jagged peaks of the Bugaboos –a granite mountain range in the Purcell Mountains of eastern British Columbia. A stunning land-sea of serrated ridges, turquoise lakes, lush meadows, and blue-tinged glaciers surround us.

Only a few hours earlier, I’d scrambled aboard a twin-engine Bell 212, 14-passenger helicopter at the CMH helipad (near Radium Hot Springs) after a scenic two-hour drive from Banff. The ten-minute flight to the Bugaboo Lodge, one of 11 self-sufficient, eco-sensitive lodges run by CMH, provided a thrilling, IMAX view of snow-capped peaks, evergreen forests, glistening snowfields, and wildflower-filled valleys sandwiched between rocky ridges. By comparison, it would have taken two full days of hard walking to cover the same distance.

There are ten of us Bodacious Babes (a title kindly bestowed upon our group by the rest of the 44 Bugaboo Lodge guests). The Babes, I discover at a pre-hike group dinner in Banff, are ALREADY excellent, admirable, or attractive. I find this particularly daunting because, well, I was hoping to BECOME bodacious. And those yoga bodies. Come on. How bout a little slack here. I feel like an imposter, and am ready to call the home office to trade-in my babe status for a non-bodacious dance card. But the Babes will have no part of it.

“It’s amazing. You clear your mind while rejuvenating body and soul. Maybe it’s the fresh mountain air. Or the skinny dipping,” says Glenda, a model-beautiful family physician from Calgary returning for her second Bodacious getaway.

“Angie is the best there is,” says Ellen Slaughter, the passion and inspiration behind the CMH girlfriend getaways, of the lovely yogini and Bodacious co-host, Angie Smith.

“If I can do it, you can,” quips Shira, a world-savvy NYC urbanite. “I mean, my idea of a hike is walking from Midtown to the Lower East Side.”

I knew I wanted a hiking vacation that would kick my butt. And I knew that come the end of a kick-ass day, I wanted comfort: hot tub; steam room and sauna; healthy gourmet meals; massage; and yes, when my legs won’t take me one step further and my lungs are screaming for oxygen, a helicopter ride home. So sue me.

In fact, it is the tantalizing blend of High Country wilderness, post-adventure pampering, friendly professional guides and the ease of access that helicopter-assisted hiking offers that is the real magic of the CMH experience – keeping dreams and sweat intact.

It can take a fortune to outfit a hiking expedition, not to mention trunk-sized luggage to carry the gear required for backcountry hiking, but thankfully CMH provides most of the specialized equipment necessary. Upon arrival, each guest is outfitted with technical, waterproof, leather hiking boots, day pack, water bottle, walking stick/ski pole, insulated, hooded jacket (wind and rain resistant), rain pants, and mountaineering gear (for the truly gutsy) to be returned at the end of the trip.

The concept is simple. Early each morning, the Babes congregate in the lodge’s yoga room, some clutching a steaming mug of tea, others, like me, stumble in still bleary eyed from sleep. Before us, a wall of glass frames the beautiful Bugaboo Range and Spires as morning light paints the peaks purple then pink. Together, Angie leads us through a series of breathing exercises, warm-ups, yoga postures, and meditations, giving concise but detailed instructions. The tension in my body releases and my mind finds stillness in the steady breathing. By the time we break for breakfast, I am more flexible, stronger, calmer, more balanced and centered.

Our days are spent fleet-footing it in the wide-open spaces of the alpine backcountry, transported each morning by helicopter to terrain chosen mindfully by CMH staff to best suit the group’s fitness level, the day’s weather, and successful cohabitation with the moose, bear, goats and wolves who are the only residents here.

Following our fearless leader, Lyle, we traipse across hairline ridges, race wildly down scree-covered slopes, and hoof it through an untrammeled topography of granite and sandstone, glacial streams and shattered shale that chimes like breaking glass under our footsteps. No iPhone app, no Wii fitness, no modern technology – just a primeval landscape of mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and glaciers a mere 75 million years in the making.

By late afternoon, seemingly at the very moment when we have had enough, a helicopter arrives to take us home. A half-hour later we are simmering in the lodge’s hot tub or sidling up to the bar to recap the day’s adventures over a chilled microbrew or glass of wine before dinner.

At night, we party. Kinda. At least until 9PM when we’re too pooped to party. By then, we’re grateful for a soak in the hot tub beneath a star studded sky, a comfortable bed or radiant heated flooring in the bathroom.

But it isn’t just helicopters and hot tubs that make a CMH heli-hiking vacation the epitome of adventure travel. After all, the Internet swarms with amazing adventure travel trips, each as exotic as the next. The difference is this: If your hiking boot is digging into your ankle in a way that no moleskin or rearrangement of your socks can fix, your guide will notice and radio the helicopter to bring you three other brands of boots in two other sizes that might work better. If you’re allergic to gluten, or diabetic, or lactose intolerant, you will receive specially prepared meals customized to your tastes and tolerances. No ceremony. No fuss. Just delicious. If you have a need, anything, before you even realize you have it, someone will notice and remedy that need. That’s the difference.

I think of this as I climb into the helicopter for our final flight back to the helipad. There is something wonderfully cozy about the scene before me. The Babes giggle and chat with the other lodge guests we have gotten to know over meals, in the steam room, over drinks at the bar or raucous ping-pong games. CEOs sit side by side with yoga bodied suburban mothers, Internet entrepreneurs, doctors and lawyers, gangly teens and Teva-clad grandmothers. I catch snippets of conversation. “Let’s keep in touch.” “You look younger than you did a week ago.” “This is our 18th CMH vacation [wow!].” “I wish I didn’t have to go.”

I’m home a week, settling back into my quiet life in the rural mountains of southern New Mexico, when a ping on my BlackBerry alerts me to a new E-mail. It’s from Head Babe, Ellen Slaughter. In true CMH style, she has taken the time to write a personal note. “Ellen - You are in every way the definition of Bodacious....remarkable, gutsy, voluptuous, impressive and beautiful. I'm so happy you were able to join us this year. Finally I have a Bodacious namesake.” In this moment, I smile, set down the phone, and go out for a morning run. The Mocha Grande can wait.

Sonoma Cont'd Day 3: The French Laundry!

One of the biggest highlights of my Sonoma trip was our lunch at The French Laundry.

The minute we all decided on a wine country trip my biggest wish was that we try to get a reservation at TFL. For those of you that don't know, this is one of the premier restaurants in the country. Historically, reservations are usually very difficult to come by. They do not accept till exactly 60 days prior to the actual day. People are still asking me "how in the world did you get a reservation?".

We all decided that lunch would be a great way to enjoy our dining experience at TFL. Two of us diligently called on the 60th day prior of our first choice date and we were both wait listed for all and any dining options during our stay. If I were a better writer I could give you a more colorful explanation of all the trials and tribulations we went through to be finally confirmed...

'll just say, the week before the trip our reservation for 4 on our first choice lunch date was confirmed! My trip itinerary was complete!

The day had finally arrived and we drove to Yountville where TFL is located. The building a very charming house/cottage that was once was a laundry, hence the name...

Across from the street are their gardens where they grow their own vegetables and herbs.

From the moment we stepped inside we knew it would be a dining experience of a lifetime.

They greeted and sat us at a lovely table on the first floor. We struggled over the incredible wine list and decided to start with a glass of champagne to toast our lunch.

There were 2 menu options, The Chef's Tasting and the Tastings of Vegetables and each included 9 course options. Since there were 4 of us we decided on 2 of each so we could all have tastes of each. The Sommelier recommended a lovely wine that would accompany both menus ( and our budgets..).

The dining experience was amazing, each course was better than the next, it was perfect that we had the opportunity to try both tastings. The service was impeccable as well. I describe it as "California Formal" as the hosts & servers were not only very attentive but they had a casual comfortable way about them including great sense of humor. For such a high end restaurant there was no "stuffy or condescending" feel at all.

If the 9 courses were not enough, they ended our meal with special treats that included hand made chocolates (that they boxed up for us as we could not imagine eating more at that time) and also gave each guest a gift of signature shortbread cookies to take away with you as well.

Needless to say that if you are a foodie in any capacity ( and your budget allows..) this is truly one dining experience you must add to your "bucket list"!

Sonoma Girls's Getaway Days 1 & 2

It has been a while since my last trip to wine country and my first to Sonoma. What better way to spend it then with 3 longtime friends flying in from all over the USA. We met at the San Francisco airport and then headed out for your road trip to Sonoma in our rental car, a BIG WHITE Mercury Grand Marquis ......needless to say that started the weekend off with a good laugh and made for lots of jokes the entire weekend..... Lucky me got to drive it to Sonoma....:)

We stayed at the beautiful Fairmont Mission Inn & Spa. From the moment we arrived we knew it was going to be a great stay. the main lobby area is very large but also very welcoming, the staff friendly and accommodating. Thanks to my friends at Fairmont I was upgraded to one of their deluxe rooms with a fireplace. Had it been a romantic weekend versus a girlfriend getaway I know I would of taken advantage of it!

Our first night we had dinner at The Girl & the Fig in downtown Sonoma. I had read lots of great reviews so was really looking forward to trying it out. It was a perfect casual spot and we were able to get a table outside. All of our apps, entrees and desserts were excellent along with the perfect wine recommended by our waitress. The Girl & the Fig is a must when you travel to Sonoma!

We also loved the quaintness of downtown Sonoma . It has a very laid back feel and not super "touristy" . We knew we wanted to come back another day when the shops would be open.

The next day we had reserved a car and driver with Beau Wine Tours to take us to the wineries. We were picked up promptly at 10:00 AM and were on our way. Our first stop was Ledson and tasted some great wines thanks to our wine expert, Mike. Ledson resides in a Chateau designed building and definitely let's you know you are in wine country.

Next top was J Winery and I have to say we went from one extreme to the next as the building that houses J Winery is very modern and contemporary. The wines there were also great and
we especially like their Chardonnay. It was now time for lunch! We had reservations at the Ravenous Cafe in Healdsburg. Ravenous was recommend and did not disappoint! The freshness of the produce was amazing and again another great wine selection from our waitress.

We loved the small glimpse of the town of Healdsburg we saw on our way to lunch and only wished we had time to stroll the sidewalks and pop in to the shops but we had a 2pm appointment at A Rafanelli Winery that we ( I) did not want to miss. We decided at that point that we were going to extend our car and driver and end our day back in Healdsburg as not to miss anything!.

Arriving at A Rafanelli requires not just an appointment but also the code to get through the gate onto the property. This exclusivity made me even more happy we came! It's location was one of the best as it was perched on a hill and the view of the vineyards is beautiful. A Rafanelli is a family owned winery and were fortunate enough to meet the owner David Rafanelli himself!

Not only were the wines excellent but they also had their own chocolate out for tasting and displayed David's latest passion, oil olive. As he is still working to refine they have not yet started selling to the public (although it has already won some awards in California).

After chatting with David about his wines and the fact we couldn't purchase the olive oil yet, he surprised us on our way out with 2 complimentary bottles. This was definitely worth the stop and the olive oil is very good!

During our tasting at A Rafanelli, we met a couple who recommend we also make a stop at Truett Hurst Winery. Like each of the wineries we visited, Truett Hurst had its own style and appeal. The owner, Phil Hurst was there engaging conversation with the visitors and also encouraging us to take a walk down to the creek on their property. Had we not already had lunch, this would be a great location to have a picnic. Outside the main building are comfortable sofas and chairs along with a very large vegetable garden. Phil gave us some bags and told us to help ourselves to the tomatoes. I don't think I have ever seen so many varieties grown in one garden.

After we drank and bought more wine, relaxed a bit, picked tomatoes we were on our way once again. We headed back to Healdsburg and filled the remainder of the afternoon browsing through the shops, tasting more wine and I even fit in a little business. I had heard great things about the Hotel Healdsburg and wanted to check it out and glad I did.

The Hotel Healsdburg is a full service luxury hotel located in the towne plaza. Since they had unoccupied rooms, they were nice enough to give me a tour of a couple different rooms as well as the property. It is smaller more of a boutique hotel and I will definitely be recommending it to anyone who wants to stay in the Healdsburg area. I would love to even stay here myself on my next trip to Sonoma.

Well, after a very long day and full day we were ready to head back to our luxury hotel!

After relaxing at our hotel for the early evening we headed back to downtown Sonoma for a late dinner at the Cafe Le Haye, a small bistro recommend by a waitress at the Fairmont. She described it as a restaurant that the locals frequent, always a good sign.....The place was packed when we arrived and after a short wait we were seated. This is another restaurant to add to the list when visiting Sonoma. Staff very friendly & the food was great. No wine with dinner though, as after a full day of tasting we had reached our limit.

Mallorca

I am known for a few things. One is getting ahead of myself, so when we boarded the plane to Mallorca, I was getting extremely depressed that the vacation was almost over. Another is the inability to relax. I say it’s all I want to do, but can never seem to make myself sit still long enough to do it. So, I got off the plane hoping to soak up every last minute of our Spanish getaway while already making a list of all of the things I wanted to do: go into the mountains, see the caves, visit a vineyard, sail.

But the moment our cab pulled up to Hospes Maricel, I felt a sense of calm take over my entire body. This luxury resort, located right on the Mediterranean Sea, is without a doubt the most gorgeous place I have ever stayed. As you walk through the front door, you are welcomed by a breathtaking view of the Mediterranean made even more stunning thanks to the minimalist design of the hotel. Large windows, high ceilings, bare floors and stone arches allow the vibrant blue sea to take center stage.

The service is as notable as the beautiful surroundings. We were greeted with a warm smile and escorted to the back terrace, where we were invited to relax on the chaise lounges and enjoy complimentary cava while they got our room keys ready. Once again, AGGG had requested an upgrade to our room if possible, and we got a spacious corner room on the back of the building with four ocean-view windows allowing for a cross-breeze that felt amazing at night. Just like Hospes Madrid, the décor was marked by a high attention to detail, but this time to match the sea and sky of Mallorca rather than the urban whimsy of Madrid: white linens, white couches and white marble with granite, marble and stone. And for accents? Well, the turquoise sea takes care of those.

After settling in, we went down to the pool area where an infinity pool flows straight out to sea. Wooden chairs are arranged all around the pool, with white umbrellas that can be moved around to create pockets of shade. My favorite part was little caves carved right into the base of the hotel where white cushions with built-in pillows make the perfect napping or reading spot when you’ve had enough sun. The Senzone Pool Bar serves cocktails and food, making it easy to stay and relax all day.

As part of our package, we received a gift certificate for a 20-minute massage and after seeing The Bodyna Spa, we had visions of service after our service floating through our head. The Bodyna is located in the new extension of Hospes Maricel, a short two minute walk from where our rooms were (there are also rooms in the new extension, although I would definitely recommend staying in the original, Oceanside section). A full mind and wellness center, The Bodyna has treatment rooms, as well as a gym (complimentary for guests), a sauna, steam room, indoor/ outdoor pool, hot tub, and relaxation room. I loved the outdoor area where you could crawl into giant covered chairs that looked like white bonnets to read, nap or just do absolutely nothing. There’s also a summer spa, located at the original building, with private, outdoor treatment rooms where you can get your massage while the ocean calmly waves back and forth below. Two big tips: book your treatments before you go and book your massages with Katherine.

After just one hour at Hospes Maricel, we all realized the only sightseeing we planned to be doing was staring at the sea in between spa treatments, cocktails and naps.

We had asked the concierge at Hospes Maricel where to go for good restaurants, and they kindly gave us a hand-written list of detailed recommendations, which we slowly chipped away at. Hopefully, one day we can go back and try the rest!

Puerto Portals – This prestigious port is one of the most luxurious yachting marinas in all of Europe, so naturally has become a posh destination for designer shops and reputable restaurants. Head here an hour or so before dinner to walk along the water and gape at the gorgeous yachts (some day, some day….). Grab a pre-dinner cocktail at the Moet and Chandon bar for the best Bellini and people watching you’ll ever have. Warning: while worth it, the tab will not be pretty.

Our first night, we ate at Tristan Bistro, the more casual eatery to Restaurant Tristan (located right next door), which has two Michelin stars and requires jacket and tie. Tristan Bistro is only casual when compared to Restaurant Tristan, and is still a sophisticated, elegant and stylish experience. The inspired Italian cuisine is some of the best any of us have ever had, and we’ve all been to Italy. You’ve got to try the Parmesan Truffle Tagliatelle. Again, the tab was not pretty but worth every single bite.

We ironically ended our ‘Road Trip to Spain’ with another Italian meal at Ritzi Restaurant, also in Puerto Portals. Similar to our dinner at Tristan, each and every one of us was blown away by our order, but again everyone’s favorite dish was the one with truffle: Truffle infused Caviatelli. As we savored every last bite of Burrata, passed around the Caviatelli, and sipped our Barbera, we toasted to our next trip… to Tuscany.

Barcelona

Barcelona. I had visions of late-night tapas bars brimming with shoulder to shoulder crowds and spirited markets with vendors and customers yelling back and forth. I pictured bottomless pitchers of sangria, sexy Flamenco dancers, stunning architecture, Jamon hanging from the ceiling, and platters and platters of Manchego cheese. It did not disappoint.

We arrived on Sunday around 1 pm, taking a cab from the train station to Hotel Jazz, our home for the next few days. This chic hotel is located in the center of Barcelona just a short walk from Las Ramblas, the Gothic neighborhood and the Boqueria market (more on those later). Compared to the plush, trendy décor of Hospes Madrid, Hotel Jazz is stark, but in the most comfortable, sophisticated way possible. Using minimal design, Hotel Jazz uses concrete flooring and low, modern couches with accents of orange to set the scene.
Like in Madrid, we arrived before check-in, but they made sure one of our rooms was ready so that we’d all have somewhere to freshen up before heading out for the day. After checking out the rooms (very clean), we went up to the rooftop where they have a pool and deck chairs. We never did get to take advantage of that, but for some reason, it was nice just to know it was there. Included in our booking was complimentary breakfast for two each day, and I could not get over the spread they put out every morning. The endless table of mini pastries (yum, chocolate croissants), yogurt, granola, fresh fruit, cured meats and cheeses (only in Spain would Jamon and Manchego count as breakfast) and more made me wish I was a breakfast person.

Another great feature of Hotel Jazz is the bar on the first floor, especially if you’re traveling with a group like we were. Our routine quickly became go out for the day, take a nap, get cleaned up, then meet in the bar for a cocktail before hitting the city again for dinner. Insider tip: if it rains while you’re there (like it did for us), make sure to borrow one of Hotel Jazz’s huge, golf-sized umbrellas.

All in all, Hotel Jazz was a stylish, convenient way to see Barcelona. We did drool at the new W along the beach which shimmers and soars above the water like a giant sail, but we all agreed that we wouldn’t have traded the ease of being in the heart of the city.

While you’re there:

Fat Tire Bike Tours – This was a fun way to see the city. Don’t be intimidated: it’s by no means an arduous bike tour and the only real challenge is staying upright as you weave through the old, windy roads of the Barri Gotic trying not to hit pedestrians! The tours meet in Plaza Sant Jaume, home to the Ajuntament (City Hall) and the Palau de la Generalitat (seat of the Catalan regional government). You’ll go through the Plaza del Rei, where Ferdinand and Isabella supposedly met with Columbus. Then on to all sorts of sites like the La Sagrada Familia designed by Gaudi, the lush Parc de la Ciutadella and the Barceloneta beach.

Friexenet – Where France has Moet & Chandon, Spain has Freixenet, a prestigious Cava house in Catalonia. Drinking cava seemed like the perfect way to start a day, so we signed up for a morning tour. The Freixenet winery is located in Sant Sadurni D'Anoia, just outside of Barcelona, and it was very easy to get to on the Metro. The experience begins with a video presentation (definitely my least favorite part, but it’s only about 10 minutes long) and then a guide takes you down into the caves to walk you through the entire process from start to finish. The best part, of course, is the tasting and we must have been impressed considering we stayed and ordered two more glasses each once the tour was done.

La Boqueria Market – This is the only real reason to head to Las Ramblas, which is otherwise known for being a gigantic tourist trap where you’ll be approached to buy anything from birds to flags to football (soccer) jerseys. The Boqueria is a vibrant, bustling open-air market stocked with stalls selling everything from fish and meats to cheese, nuts and chocolate. I loaded up on macadamia nuts, cashews, dark chocolate and rosemary crusted manchego.

Bar Pinotxo – On our Fat Tire tour, we met a guy from Montreal who was traveling alone, so invited him to dinner. He was staying at the apartment of a local who had kindly left a handwritten note of places to eat. Bar Pinotxo, a stall in the Boqueria was at the top of the list with four stars next to it. The unassuming spot only has a few bar stools, all of which were full (always a good sign). By the time we got our turn, the stall was almost closing up, so the boys just asked for one of everything they still had. If you don’t mind not knowing what you’re getting and are adventurous with what you’ll put in your mouth, (we’re talking Rabbit’s Cheeks), then you’ll love every delicious bite. I, on the other hand, continued to nibble on Manchego while they chowed down.

Placa Reial (Royal Plaza)– This square-shaped public plaza is located in the heart of the Gothic neighborhood. At night, it’s the perfect spot to grab a few drinks before or after dinner since each side is lined with bars and restaurants, most with outdoor patios.

Parc Guell – If you haven’t heard of Gaudi, you should definitely read about his work before you go. Barcelona is full of his whimsical, colorful architecture marked by mosaics and other distinctive elements. As one of our group eloquently said, Gaudi was “cuckoo.” But brilliantly so, and there’s no better place to soak up his particular form of craziness than at Parc Guell. Gaudi was commissioned to design this area as an upscale residential community for the wealthy. After seeing his artistic vision come to life, lizards and Gingerbread houses and all, it was deemed an ugly eyesore not worth living in. Now, Gaudi’s wonderland is open to the public as a free garden where you can hike and get a gorgeous view of the entire city.

We didn’t make it, but I would definitely try to see the Museu Picasso, which I’ve heard is well worth the trip. I’d also heard that Comerc 24 is one of the best restaurants in Barcelona for authentic, creative tapas in a chic environment. It was closed when we went, but it’s at the top of my list for if I ever go back. When planning your trip, keep in mind that many restaurants take a summer vacation and are regularly closed on Sundays and/ or Mondays.

Madrid

To many travelers, choosing a hotel is not an important decision. It's just the spot where they put their bags and rest their heads, and offers a place to cut corners in the budget. I disagree. The right hotel can be a window offering a unique view by which you see the city. It can embody the art, style and culture of your surroundings in a way that perfectly positions your entire experience. And this is exactly what Hospes Madrid did as the launching point of our week in Spain.

We knew we wanted a boutique hotel, not a chain. We were willing to pay more for a great location. And while we didn't plan to spend much time in the hotel,we still wanted it to have those special touches that make you feel a little spoiled. That's how you truly know you're on vacation. A Girl's Gotta Go suggested a few options within our budget, and Hospes Madrid was the one that blew us away. Right by Plaza de la Independicia and steps from the Parque del Buen Retiro, the location couldn't be beat. The enticing image gallery displayed inviting rooms, an outdoor lounge, a relaxing spa and a chic bar.

From the second we walked through Hospes Madrid's doors - sheets of glass that automatically pulled aside, bordered by majestic wooden panels with a gothic flair - we knew we made the right choice. The fashionable lobby had marble floors, light grey velvet couches with plush accents of purple, and modern flower arrangements that created a sense of excitement to see what the rooms would look like. We had arrived hours before check in, so our rooms weren't ready yet, but the friendly, English speaking staff gave us complimentary sparkling water and took us to the spa so that we could freshen up. The luxurious, zen like space made me wish for more time than our 24 hours in Madrid, so we could soak up the services.

Similarly, when we were let into our stunning, spacious room (I noticed that AGGG had kindly left a note to the hotel to please upgrade us if possible and they did!), I was tempted to settle in rather than sightsee. The dark wooden floors contrasted with crisp white bedding and couches. Whimsical silver nightstands, and brocade pillows and blankets gave a punch of personality. The large bathroom had a his and hers sink, a treat for us since we share at home, and was stocked with yummy products like vanilla and cinnamon shower gel and convenient kits like dental, shaving and even a shoe shine. Fluffy robes and slippers beckoned next to a large tub and sleek shower complete with a waterfall from the ceiling.

My favorite part was the two windows with balconies, framed by gauze curtains that opened into the interior courtyard. The streets of Madrid are lined with buildings whose balconies step into the fresh air. You see those lucky few who get to live there lingering at home on a Saturday afternoon while still getting a taste of the city by a simple flourish of the window. And in our little slice of Madrid, I got to do the same. All of these little touches add up to that feeling that you're home, at least for now.

So, it's no wonder Jon later looked at a map, pointed to Hospes Madrid and said, "We need to head north to get back to where we live."

We were having trouble getting our bearings, so decided to do the hop-on/ hop-off bus tour with Madrid VISION. There are two options: Route 1 is Historical Madrid and Route 2 is Modern Madrid. We chose Route 1 and it was a great way to see the city and find some places we wanted to explore.

Make sure to go to the Mercado San Miguel, a beautiful market that simultaneously feels like you’re at an open-air produce stand and at a trendy tapas spot. Stalls of cheese, fresh fruit, meats and more are interspersed with wine bars where you can walk up and have a glass of Rioja. We could not get enough Manchego and Idiazabel cheese.

For a nightcap, we went to the Glass Bar inside the Hotel Urban for cava (sparkling wine). This is a posh spot worth the splurge for at least one drink. Think Alice in Wonderland meets the lap of luxury with glass chairs, tables and chandeliers.

There are tons of tapas restaurants, but the more authentic ones are around La Plaza de Santa Ana. This square is less touristy and has a vibrant nightlife. We popped in and out of some shops, drawn in by the rows of ham hanging from the ceiling, for little bites of Jamon (the most delicious dry-cured mountain ham) before taking a Sangria and Manchego (yes, more Manchego!) break at an outdoor restaurant right in the Plaza.

If it's shopping you're after, go to Salamanca, a stylish, elegant (and expensive!) neighborhood that is one of Madrid's most fashionable spots. Calle Serrano is lined with luxury, from international brands like Chanel and Burberry to local boutiques. Even if it's just to window shop, wandering and people watching in this gorgeous neighborhood is the perfect afternoon for any fashionista.

Spain, Here We Come.

Two years ago, almost exactly, Jon (my husband) and I took a Mediterranean cruise for our honeymoon. Our plan? Get a taste of different countries, then pick one to go back to in a few years for a full week. After a twelve day whirlwind through Croatia, Greece, Italy, France and Monaco marked by an indulgent amount of wine, food and shopping, it was anyone's guess where we'd go next. Our only disappointment was that, while we flew out of Barcelona, we didn't get to spend any time in Spain.

Fast forward two years later with no vacations in between. Jon was on my case to finally take that trip I promised. Since every plot needs an unexpected twist, all of a sudden our good friends (foodies and winos just like us) decided they had to get away too. A conference call was scheduled (yes, I was actually sent an email with a dial in requesting my presence to discuss our travel plans, causing me to rethink my choice of travel companions). On the table? A Caribbean Cruise. A trip to Ireland with a few days spent in Prague (random, but balanced visiting friends in Belfast with what we've heard is an amazing city). Oktoberfest in Germany, which by the way actually starts in September. And Spain.

Oddly enough, Jon's love of all things Italian and mine for all things fashion led us to Spain. Sure, it had been on our radar since that quick taxi ride to the Barcelona airport, but it was Mario Batali and Gwyneth Paltrow who really took us there. Their On the Road Again series for PBS was the perfect way to merge Jon's interests (cooking, pizza, pasta, travel) with mine (fashion, wine, journalism). With New York Times writer and bestselling author, Mark Bittman, and Spanish actress, Claudia Basolls, in tow, the foursome struck the perfect balance.

Forty-five minutes into the conference call, (I know, I know), we finally agreed...Spain. And I knew just who to call to make it happen...A Girl's Gotta Go. Here's the fabulous plan AGGG made for us:

I expect plenty of espresso so I can stay up til four am like the locals, tapas and tapas and more tapas, and my blood to turn into tinto vino. Stay tuned for our own version of the Spanish road trip. I'll play Gwyneth. The only question: which of our foursome is to fill the orange Crocs of Batali?

The Martha Stewart craft studio offers 5 classes demonstrating hands on techniques and providing you with a souvenir to take home. There’s also the X-BOX 360® Games Garage for your tweens, teens, and adult game enthusiasts filled with plasma screen TVs and the latest games on the market. It’s impressive to see even as a non-gamer. Teens and tweens can also sign up for the unique Scratch DJ Academy to learn to spin modern beats.Younger children are able to take part in the day camps available and will also relish in the appearance of the Sesame Street characters throughout the Resort.

This Travelista stayed in the Caribbean village in a very large honeymoon suite including a large 4 poster king sized bed. While the Caribbean Village was very nice, the New Italian village features beautiful suites with marble tile bathrooms and dark mahogany accents. The Italian village also features 2 bedroom suites with a bunk bed room for kids, and an optional family room area.

Royal Treatment at the Sandals Royal Bahamian

"If we can receive a call at 5:30 and are asked to prepare 120 plus rooms as well as dinner and entertainment for 190 people for 2 hour later that evening, and we deliver! Imagine what we can do for your next honeymoon couple." said Jeremy Mutton, General Manager of Sandals Royal Bahamian.

We were not originally meant to stay at the Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau Bahamas, however hurricane Earl caused us to change our plans at the last minute. Despite the short notice provided to the staff, as Jeremy Mutton described, the welcome we received made for a royal first impression of the Sandals Royal Bahamian Resort.

The pool area and grounds of the resort are decorated and landscaped to feel as though you could be at an ancient Royal Greek or Roman Spa complete with white stone and column facades surrounding the pool areas. The resort houses some of the only heated pools on the island for the cooler winter Bahamian months. The pool area also offers misters to cool off the sun bathers in the steamy summer months.The main building of the hotel was originally the private manor escape for British Monarchs. Thus the cozy feel of a British royal living room has been carried throughout the lobby and common areas. There is even high tea served in the afternoon to keep with the British tradition.

All of the rooms are generous in size and offer four poster beds and crisp white linens. The bathrooms, while not brand new, all feature granite counter tops and tiled showers with soaking tubs. Most of the rooms offer balconies or patios. Some also feature spectacular ocean vistas. If yours does not, I strongly suggest you take a trip up to the gym for some true fitness inspiration.The powder beach and turquoise Caribbean water of the Bahamas will continue to amaze visitors. The resort has enhanced its guests’ ability to enjoy the view by offering tiered cozy lounge chairs built for two that face the ocean. They even feature individual fire pits for those romantic cooler evenings. Guests staying in the Butler room category also have the option to dine at the open-aired restaurant over the water, Gordon’s on the Pier. (Guests not booked in a Butler room category can also enjoy Gordon’s at an additional cost.)
As a change of scenery, guests can take a boat out to the Royal Bahamian’s offshore island, Sandals Cay, which features two more beaches and another pool with a swim-up bar. While the rough seas prevented us from visiting this tropical paradise, we were told that the beaches feature thatched-roof palapas huts containing cozy lounge chairs. Some Red Lane Spa treatments, including massages can be found here as well.

Beyond enjoying all nine specialty restaurants and all of the activities Sandals Royal Bahamian offers, Nassau also features shopping and additional restaurants a short taxi ride away along Bay Street. Just Maui’d Hawaii

With a short plane ride, we arrived in Maui. On first impression we were surprised that Maui was such a different island-scape from Kaua’i. The large Cook Pines and lush greens of Kaua’i were now traded for large expanses of pineapple and sugar cane fields. It seemed as though we had left the jungle and come to the plains.

We stayed at the Westin Maui Resort and Spa on Ka’anapali Beach. You enter the resort into a beautiful waterfall tropical vista in the lobby complete with Koi fish in the pond, real live pink flamingos (not the plastic variety) and 5 resident parrots.
The 5 pools that make up the center of the hotel are all on different tiers of the property connected by waterfalls and tropical flora and fauna. The hotel rooms however were on the small side for our taste. The hotel room and patio furniture, while appearing new and modern, was not holding up to the wear and tear of the highly travelled hotel. The view from our 9th floor hotel room was beautiful and we did enjoy waking up to the expansive ocean vista.

Our first day in Maui we were in bed by 9PM to get some rest for our 2AM wake-up call for Cruiser Phil’s sunrise bike ride down from the Haleakala Crater “The House of the Sun”. Your travel companions may not be happy with the 2AM wake-up call at first, but the experience will soon make up for it. The adventure begins as they pick you up in the quiet dead of night and take you to headquarters where hot coffee, tea and hot chocolate as well as some snacks are waiting. You are then outfitted with leather bomber jackets and ski gloves for the next ride to the top, an elevation of 10,023 feet. The driver was very sweet by not talking for most of the ride up allowing for a few extra moments of shut eye. I’ll allow the photos of sunrise to speak for themselves.We then met up with our bike guides and started the winding 28 mile trek down the volcano. I strongly suggest Cruiser Phil’s as they are one of the few companies that not only guide you down the entire mountain, but they also block cars for you as you go. We ended the adventure with breakfast in the cute hippy town of Paia, where I enjoyed a great bagel sandwich at the Mango Café. We were back at our hotel by 12 with plenty of time to take a nap.

We woke up in time to join the cocktail hour of the Wailele Luau at The Westin. We were very happy we spent the extra $20 to be at one of the front tables. The food, drinks, and show were all very good. They did a great job of involving the audience and adding in a few laughs. We were even invited to dance with other couples to a Hawaiian love song. The luau ended with an amazing fire –knife show that had everyone in the audience in awe.

The rest of our days were spent by the pool with a few activities here and there. We were very glad we reserved cabanas by the pool each day as every other chair was taken by 8AM, especially on the 4th. We were able to try paddle boarding along the beach one day. Although we did not go out on the well-known course, we had fun at the Ka’anapali driving range one afternoon. We also went horseback riding along the sloping hillsides of the Piiholo Ranch. The horses are all very well cared for, and the scenery is beautiful. We did not make it out to go snorkeling, although we heard that sea turtles were easily spotted.

On our second night we enjoyed a cocktail hour and sunset cruise aboard the Gemini. It only sprinkled for a bit while we are off-shore, but it brought out one of the most beautiful double rainbows over the island that I have ever seen. Captain David was very nice and made our voyage very pleasant.
The hotel was in an ideal location to check out Whaler’s Village and the other resort restaurants on the Ka’anapali Beach strip. This prime location also added to the crowds though, so if you are looking for seclusion we would suggest the Ritz further up the Coast or trying the South Shore. A couple restaurants worth noting were:
Hula Grill, Whaler’s Village – is the perfect casual beach front bar to watch the sunset and enjoy some happy hour specials, and it’s also a great spot to have some night caps after dinner. The bartenders are all friendly and attentive.
Cheeseburger in Paradise – in the town of Lahaina – while a bit touristy, offers a great upstairs view and has amazing sliders!
Cane & Taro, Whaler’s Village – For those couples, like us, where one is a seafood/sushi lover while the other sticks to the land animals, Cane & Taro offers the perfect blended menu. I was able to enjoy a tasty Dragonfly Roll while my husband polished off one of his favorites, meatloaf.
Son’z Maui at Swan Court in the Hyatt Regency – We both started with “Just a Salad” although the name sells it a bit short as it did not taste ordinary at all. It was very good with a unique dressing. Brian enjoyed a wonderful Prime Rib, while I opted for a delicious fish special. We finished the meal with a tasty cinnamon crème brulee as we drank a complimentary half bottle of champagne.

Kaua’i Hawaii, A Truly Tropical Escape

The location for our honeymoon was not even a discussion but a statement…Hawaii. The only real decision was the islands we would visit. After hearing many good things about the Garden Isle, we determined that it may be nice to completely relax in seclusion for the first few days after the wedding, and Kaua’i did not disappoint.

We stayed at the Grand Hyatt Kaua’i in Poipu which was absolutely gorgeous. The hotel rooms and grounds were spectacular, complete with parrots, swans and Koi fish. We stayed in a Garden View room for two nights and an Ocean View room for two nights, and both views were great. We enjoyed both rooms due to a mix up at the hotel. The issue was handled by a manager and we were very well compensated with resort credits and amenity upgrades. The rooms were both very spacious and clean. The bathrooms were also large and modern. Each room had its own balcony with two chairs, perfect for enjoying our complimentary bottle of champagne and strawberries. The entire resort staff was friendly, helpful, and always courteous.

The first day we were up early adjusting to the time difference, so we used the opportunity to get “a lay of the land” with a walk around the expansive hotel pools, beach and restaurants. We spent the entire day by the pool with the exception of our Lomi Lomi Massages at the Anara Spa. I’ve been to tropical spas before, but the Anara is absolute tropical luxury. I especially enjoyed the access to the outdoor lava rock showers with heavenly mango scented body wash, shampoo and conditioner. We ended the day with dinner at Tidepools amongst the Koi filled ponds and tiki torches.

We became a bit more adventurous on the second day by renting a car, which was kindly upgraded for free to a Jeep by the Avis agent. We started with an expertly guided plane tour of the Waimea Canyon and Na Pali Coast with Wings Over Kaua’i. We then took a drive up to Princeville and Hanalei for lunch at Bouchons and a land view of the beautiful Hanalei Bay. That evening we visited the quaint outdoor Poipu shopping center for dinner at Keoki’s Paradise.

We were both excited to try zip-lining with Outfitter’s Kaua’i and all of our expectations were exceeded. The energetic tour guides made the entire adventure relaxed and fun, despite my own fear of heights. We were able to experience 5 lines, two of which we did twice. They also feature 2 tandem lines, one being 1800 feet long across a forest canyon. At the end of the journey, we enjoyed a swim and a few jumps in a natural lagoon. The only word to describe the experience is UNBELIEVABLE.
We rounded out our final day with two amazing food experiences. My mouth waters even now thinking of the Hawaiian hot dog original, Puka Dogs in the Poipu Shopping Center. Famous for their relishes and mustards, it is the perfect casual lunch or afternoon snack. Then you must make reservations for dinner at the Beach House. Make sure to ask for a water front table. The view probably gave this meal a large boost in our ratings. However, the drinks, food and service were all top notch. The prices were there to match, but it is worth the splurge.

Mom and Daughter trip to the Sanderling Resort & Spa

After 20 years of trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina (fondly referred to as OBX by most) I recently had the unique opportunity to stay at the Sanderling Resort and Spa for a long weekend with my mother. If you are choosing to stay at a hotel or resort while on the OBX, the Sanderling Resort & Spa provides the quintessential OBX experience. There property is comprised of several low buildings "Inns" that blend into the natural surroundings. The resort is situated at a narrow point of the OBX allowing for stunning views of both the sound and ocean.

Like the rest of the OBX, the resort feels as though it has been preserved in time and protected from commercialism while still maintaining all modern conveniences like newly remodeled large spa-like bathrooms, flat screen TVs and Free WiFi.
We stayed in an ocean view room on the second floor of the "North Inn" and enjoyed making use of our spacious balcony.
The rooms are all well appointed from the comfy beds to the spa soaps and lotions provided in the bathroom. They also provided free coffee in the lobby in the morning and delicious fresh apples near the entrances every day, which we both found to be a nice touch. On a particularly cool morning they even turned on the fire in the lobby to add to that cozy feel.

Each morning we started our day with a delicious breakfast at the historic Lifesaving Station Restaurant, one of the dining options available to the resort. I can highly recommend the Pecan Waffle with Maple Butter.

My mom and I were in the area on family business but we did take a few hours to visit the spa for a wonderful mani/pedi session. The staff were extremely pleasant and everything down to the fresh cucumber water available upon arrival added to the calming zen feeling. Overall the Sanderling Resort Spa and the natural beauty of the OBX delivered a wonderful long weekend getaway!

Napa & San Franciso trip

Another happy customer......Wanted to share some great feedback from our clients Liana and James D from their trip to Napa and San Francisco. They stayed at two great B & B's, the Old World Inn in Napa and The Union Street in San Francisco.

"A Girl's Gotta Go helped me plan yet another fabulous trip. We enjoyed the beautiful vineyards in Napa. The weather was perfect and the inns were so quaint. Fresh gourmet breakfast daily and we enjoyed appetizers and wine each day before dinner. San Francisco has so much to offer. We did so many fun activities including Alcatraz and biking the Golden Gate Bridge. The restaurants were fantastic along with the shopping. Would love to go back again!"

Had a busy week after returning home from Vieques. As promised, I want to report on the remainder of our stay.

Tennis yesterday was disappointing as the Pro was out of town so she sent a replacement who was very nice but did not provide a lesson or much of a ch allege. At least lots of calories were burned playing in the heat! Tennis was followed by a massage which was great. The Spa is very nice but at this time they are only offering 2 types of massages. Eventually more services will be added.

Spent the rest of the day relaxing at the beach. It sits on a reef so getting in and out of the water is a bit of a challenge but well worth it once you are in. The resort cleared out after the weekend so I literally had the beach to myself for most of the time. Lunch at WET was great as well and was excited to see my fav ice cream macaroons on the dessert menu for lunch as well . Needless to say we splurged again....

As we finished lunch it started to rain so we grabbed our books and read on the covered deck of the great house. It was really pouring for a while, you typical heavy downpour of the tropics which was a pretty site.

After another glass or two of their great white wine Sangria, we went off property to have dinner at Next Course. It was recommended by several people at the hotel and on the island.
We were seated outside and enjoyed a lovely warm breeze. The food was great and prices were not bad for such great quality. The cab ride was only $10.00 each way so not too expensive.

We had an early flight off the island so after a nice breakfast with our favorite server Anjie, we were on our way home. Cape and and Jet Blue flights were on time so thankfully our trip home was uneventful!

I would very much recommend the W Vieques for those looking for a very laid back island getaway.

Spending a long weekend at the new W Hotel in Vieques. Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico. This my first visit to the island of Vieques. I flew Jet Blue to San Juan and then connected with Cape Air for a 20 minute flight to the island in a small 10 seater plane. The views was incredible flying in. (For those of you who don't like small planes there is also a ferry that takes about an hour or so depending on the weather.

The W has a private lounge at the Vieques airport with complimentary refreshments while you wait for the hotel car to pick you up, which is also complimentary. This was a great first impression and a nice perk.

When we arrived at the hotel (apprx 1:45pm) our room was not ready so we had a chance to to to the WET pool bar and have a cocktail. Unfortunately at 3pm check in time our room was still not ready which was disappointing. After checking in several more times and being told there were still delays we were FINALLY given a room at 5pm. This was not the best way to start our stay but I will say the staff was very apologetic, provided us with complimentary cocktails, 2 complimentary breakfast vouchers and then gave us a double upgrade to their FABULOUS Ocean Front room. I guess it was worth the wait... We just wish they had told us it would be that long to begin with as we would of gotten into our swim suits and enjoyed the beach and pool.

They have done an incredible job with the W . The public areas are very inviting and comfortable and the staff is very attentive. We were glad we were given complimentary breakfast as the breakfast buffet price is $30.00 per person and although we are in the Caribbean and expect high prices, I don't think it would have been worth the price had we paid.

Yesterday we spent touring the many beaches of the island and had lunch in Esperanza. It is definitely worth heading out to the many public beaches as they are much prettier than the W Beach. We even saw sting rays at the beach and Wild Horses on our ride, which are very common here.

After a day of exploring we opted to just have some appetizers and Sangria on the Living room deck. Both the the Red and White Wine Sangrias are great. Since we are on a mini vaca we also indulged in the macaroon ice ceam sandwiches for dessert which we had in the restarurant Mix on the Beach which is overseen by star chef Alian Ducasse. They were worth every calorie!

Today we plan to enjoy the pool and beach here at the W after a tennis lesson and massage and tomorrow we head home. I'll post more about our day and return trip later this week!

When life gives you lemons, you make Limoncello

You will rarely read a description of Italy's Amalfi coast without learning of the lemons or the Limoncello.

Limoncello (or lemoncello) is a unique and tasty lemon liqueur. Your mouth will begin to pucker as you just say the word. Limoncello is traditionally served chilled as an aperitif. Along the Amalfi Coast, it is usually served in small ceramic glasses themselves often chilled. On the island of Capri, the bottles holding the golden liquid are their own unique treasures from this beautiful landscape.
The origination of this unique liqueur holds several narratives. Some begin with the big families of Sorrento around 1900, who would always ensure that their illustrious guests would get a taste of limoncello. In Amalfi, some believe that the liquor has older origins, almost linked to the lemon cultivation. Others believe that limoncello was used for medicinal purposes in the morning by fishermen and countrymen to fight the cold. Once you taste the real liqueur you may devise your own hypotheses.

You will find locally made Limoncello in Sorrento (near the Amalfi coast), on the island of Capri and in Liguria. These areas grow the lemons used in its creation. The ingredients are simple enough that others often try to replicae it; Lemons(the peel being the most important), Italian Grappa, Water, and Sugar. However true Limoncello is steeped in tradition from the hand-picked lemons that pass a rigorous approval process through to the maceration process which takes about 3 months on its own to complete.

What's better than Limoncello? - why combining it with Gelato of course, which the actual company of "Limoncello di Capri" has wisely started to produce.

This month “The Girls” are brushing up on their Italian in honor of our feature destination. It has even prompted this Travelista to break out some favorite photos from my own travels through Italy.

For many who have been, one of the first questions tends to be, "Rome or Florence?” It’s the equivalent to asking “Boston or New York City?” Both have their merits, but the question will immediately illuminate whether you are speaking to a like minded traveler. For me, the answer is Rome. I fell in love at first sight. It is an amazing mixture of old and new worlds that you must see to understand. This is not to say that Florence does not hold its own enticing charms. It is a beautiful city and a favorite locale of art and shopping enthusiasts.

Venice, you will need to see to believe the rumors; roads are truly replaced with canals. Relish in the opportunity to literally become lost amongst the twists and turns of the alleyways and canals. I also strongly recommend a stay during Carnivale. The experience is unforgettable.

Lean with the tower of Pisa, hike through the Cinque Terre, sip Limoncello as you gaze off the Amalfi Coast, visit the mysterious Blue Grotto on the island of Capri, enjoy wine in Tuscany…there are so many places to explore and things to do. Even if you’ve been there already there are always reasons to go back. Allow us to live vicariously through you as we plan your next Italian journey…where in Italy do you gotta go?

On the last day of 2009, we'd like to end the year by thanking everyone for their support of A Girl's Gotta Go in our first year.

2009 proved to be a tough year for a lot of people financially and in turn made it a challenging year to start a new business but we are happy we did so! We appreciate all the support and encouragement we received from our family and friends. We are also thankful for all the new relationships we have made with clients, contacts and vendors over this last year.

Great Wines at 30,000 feet!

Every year, Global Traveler conducts a tasting to determine the best in airline business-class wines. And, as a recent USA Today article shows, even during this time of economic hardship, airlines refuse to reduce the costs spent on onboard wine selections. Estimates suggest airlines annually purchase 4.3 million gallons of wine and spend approximately $15 million on wine per year.

According to the airlines, serving quality wines helps uphold their reputation and instills brand loyalty among premium travelers. The process can be a logistical nightmare for airlines, but they say the effort — including using larger wineglasses, employing consultants and sommeliers and requiring flight attendants to take courses to improve wine knowledge — pays off in the long run.

South African Airways recently announced its on-board wines for 2010. The airline employs the services of wine experts to choose its wines through a rigorous selection process. Of the more than 1,000 South African wines were submitted for consideration, Philip Jonker Brut Entheos N/V, Boplaas Cape Tawny Port N/V, Old Vine Chenin Blanc 2008 and The MacKenzie 2005 made the final cut.

Each year Global Traveler conducts a wine survey to determine the best vintages served in business-class cabins around the world. Our method involves a blind testing by an expert panel of judges. In 2009, judges named Qatar Airways, Alitalia, LAN, American Airlines, Air Canada and Virgin America the winners.

Americans Plan to Travel!

According to a Deloitte LLP survey, 45 percent of Americans plan to take a vacation or leisure trip in the next four months. The trips specifically include paying for overnight accommodations between Thanksgiving and March. Eighteen percent of those surveyed will travel over the Thanksgiving holiday, while 22 percent plan to travel in December and 32 percent will travel after New Year’s and through March. When it comes to the amount of travel during the time period, 28 percent said they would take fewer trips this year, 25 percent plan to take more trips and 45 percent will take the same number as last year. Approximately 2,000 consumers were surveyed in telephone interviews between Oct. 22 and Nov. 2. As for what travelers plan to do on these trips, 74 percent will visit relatives or friends; 16 percent will visit a foreign country; 38 percent will spend at least one vacation doing warm-weather activities; 18 percent will do cold-weather activities; 34 percent will head to historic sites and national parks; 22 percent plan to visit entertainment parks and 8 percent will include volunteerism in their vacation plans

According to an American Express survey, 30 percent of U.S. consumers plan to make adjustments to Thanksgiving travel plans this year, but only 21 percent of those respondents say they plan to spend less than last year. “Spending & Saving Tracker” is the second report in a monthly series about consumers’ views on the economy, spending and saving.

More than 2,000 adults were surveyed and were split into three sub-categories: general population, affluent and young professional. Among the respondents who said their plans were changing, most said they will rely more on automobile travel, stay for a shorter amount of time and cash in rewards to help subsidize trips. The survey results indicate consumers will spend money on travel this holiday season, but most will cut back to some degree. Other findings include:

Nineteen percent of respondents who traveled last year will be staying home in 2009.

More than one in 10 young professionals intend to drive this year.

Approximately 8 percent of young professionals will spend fewer days away this Thanksgiving.

Four percent of affluent respondents will use rewards to pay for travel this holiday season.

Travel Insurance Sales On The Rise:

As concern swirls about the H1N1 flu outbreak, more travelers are relying on travel insurance. The World Health Organization continues to advise against travel restrictions, but the industry still faces challenges as the number of infected people increases. According to Travel Weekly, with uncertainties looming, travel protection plans and insurance policies are being hailed as the traveler’s only protection against cancellations and other changes resulting from the flu outbreak.

The typical travel insurance policy provides coverage for cancellations, trip interruptions and medical care. The one caveat? Most travel insurance policies kick in if a traveler falls ill prior to the trip and needs to cancel, but some plans cannot protect passengers who become sick while traveling. A separate travel medical policy could provide assistance under those circumstances.

Trip interruption coverage usually covers airfare and additional hotel costs. Medical coverage applies to other illnesses as well. Unless travelers choose coverage with a “cancel for any reason” clause, travel insurance will not protect passengers who cancel vacations because of the fear of contracting the H1N1 virus. According to Travel Guard, cancellations due to Center for Disease Control and Prevention warnings are also not covered.

JetBlue offers one-month pass for $599

JetBlue launched an unlimited travel pass that enables buyers to fly as often as they like between Sept. 8 and Oct. 8.
The pass is $599, including taxes and fees for domestic flights, and must be purchased by Aug. 21. Users can fly anywhere JetBlue flies.
Passholders must book at least three days in advance. Changes or cancellations made less than three days prior to scheduled departure will incur a $100 fee. Also, no-shows will incur a $100 fee and will have the pass suspended until the fee is paid.

62 Percent Reality

According to the most recent consumer research on travel by YPartnership/Yankelovich, 62 percent of consumers who used a travel agent said their agent was “Extremely Influential” or “Very Influential” in their choice of vacation products. This is up from 56 percent in 2008 and 54 percent in 2007. That’s a research fact in an annual study known as the National Leisure Travel Monitor. And this is no fluke -- the study has been going on for decades and three years of research show a steady growth in the influence of agents.
The YPartnership/Yankelovich Travel Monitor is an annual study that tracks trends in the travel industry based on the actual traveling customer. It measures consumer behavior year in and year out, and has been a key part of strategy, product development and marketing meetings for years. After three straight years of consumers saying agents are more and more influential in their travel choices, however, will marketing departments around the country be buzzing with strategies to reach and influence the influencer?
Indeed, that would be a good strategy given the lower revenues that, in some cases, have resulted in lower marketing budgets overall. It brings up that word I’ve used many times before – “leverage.” What agents represent for travel marketers is an easily defined marketplace that can be effectively mined for business by using the strategy of reaching the “Right Agent” with the “Right Message” in the “Right Medium.”
Instead of chasing the elusive consumer and trying to intercept them when they are ready to buy, it’s more cost effective to reach the customer through the travel agent. Indeed many more consumers are turning to these agents for their personal leisure travel plans. A thousand good agents can lead a supplier or destination to more than a million travelers. The key word here is “travelers,” since agents certainly know their customers and the fact that they are indeed travelers.
This answers the proverbial question: “Where are the travel customers?” The answer, of course, is: “They are talking to travel agents!” Back in 2005 we began seeing the consumer media’s coverage of the trend back to offline agents. We shared articles from The New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer to name two sources. As recently as yesterday, an article appeared on CNN about the latest research by Forrester, which shows consumers are getting fed up with online travel sites and are turning to offline travel agents for their travel needs. So how do you explain the increase in usage and influence when it comes to traditional travel agents when many over the years have predicted the exact opposite? Could it be the fact that there are overwhelming numbers of options when it comes to taking a trip? Even a simple trip can include, but not be limited to, transportation to and from a destination, transfers, activities, dining, entertainment, cruise ships bookings and hotel reservations.
It’s all there on the Internet, and is literally just a click away, but who wants to deal with all of that? I am not a candidate for any extra hours spent online or in the yard doing something that I can pay someone else to do. More and more customers are coming to the same conclusion when it comes to travel. They have come to realize it doesn’t even really cost them money to work with an agent, unlike their gardener. In fact, they typically save money!
There are plenty of reasons why consumers use travel agents when it comes to booking travel -- far too many to cover in this short column. And again, those who do use agents say their agent is extremely or very influential in their overall choice of travel products 62 percent of the time. Depending on the product, it is higher or lower, with influence on hotels and resorts topping out at 66 percent.
Marry these percentages with the fact that these same consumers across the United States booked in excess of $100 billion in travel with a travel agent and what do you have? The answer is a market that every supplier and destination should be looking at as they plan their sales, marketing and commission strategies for 2010.
